The Best Friend’s Society is our way of recognizing those whose planned gifts will ensure a healthy financial future for SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County and help us secure the future of the innumerable animals in need, now and in the years ahead. We are proud to honor our Best Friend’s Society members whose remarkable generosity makes so many of our life-saving programs and services for animals possible.
How can I join the Best Friends Society?
There are many ways to benefit SPCA as you make final giving plans:
Name the SPCA MHC as a beneficiary in a will or trust
Make a gift of cash or appreciated securities to establish a charitable gift annuity with SPCA MHC
Create a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) and name SPCA MHC as the beneficiary
Name SPCA MHC as the beneficiary of a paid life insurance policy or a retirement account

Planned gifts to the SPCA can be directed to existing endowment funds that serve a specific purpose, or the gift can be unspecified, in which case the Board of Directors will decide the allocation of the gift, based on available programs and needs of the SPCA.
Donations and bequests may be made to the following existing endowment funds:
Best Friends Fund – provides funding support for SPCA operating costs to ensure the long-term financial viability of the SPCA so it can continue to serve the animals in Martinsville – Henry County for generations to come
Betsy Mattox Medical Support Fund – provides funding support for the medical care SPCA animals need, including critical care, as well as in-house medical equipment and veterinary capacity and services
Judy Davis Fund – provides funding support for spay & neuter services to help control animal overpopulation
Margaret Wilson Jones Fund – provides funding support for humane education to instill compassion and kindness for animals and impart how to provide quality care for them
Jacob E. Frith II - provides funding supporting for structural and operational facility maintenance expenses, routine facility maintenance expenses, and facility contents replacement expenses
Shelley Frith Drane - provides funding support for SPCA general costs to ensure the long-term financial viability of the SPCA so it can continue to serve the animals in Martinsville – Henry County for generations to come
Reed Stone Moore - provides funding support for SPCA general costs to ensure the long-term financial viability of the SPCA so it can continue to serve the animals in Martinsville – Henry County for generations to come
New endowment funds may be created but the minimum initial contribution must be $100,000 or more.

Include us in your will or living trust
Gifts by will or living trust for the benefit of the SPCA may be for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residual amount of your estate after other distributions are made and expenses are paid.
Sample Bequest Language
The following are examples of statements that could be used to prepare a bequest or trust designation. We would be happy to work with you, your attorney, or your financial advisor to develop specific language to most accurately communicate your wishes.
Specific Bequest – Unrestricted
“I give (the sum of $_______) to the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County (Federal Tax ID: 23-7381113); a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization; to be used to further its mission as the Board of Directors, in their discretion, may deem appropriate.”
Specific Bequest – Restricted

“I give (the sum of $_______) to the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County (Federal Tax ID: 23-7381113); a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. This bequest may be combined with the organization’s other funds for purposes of investment and reinvestment, and shall be used by the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County (Federal Tax ID: 23-7381113) in support of (a specific area of interest). If, at any time, in the judgment of the Board of Directors, it is impractical or impossible to carry out this purpose, then the Board of Directors may use this bequest for such other purposes as shall be determined by the Board of Directors to be consistent with my interests and intentions.”
Residuary Bequest – Unrestricted
“I give all of (or a specific percentage of) the residue and remainder of my estate to the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County (Federal Tax ID: 23-7381113); a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization; to be used to further its mission as the Board of Directors, in their discretion, may deem appropriate.
