How To Help

Volunteer

Volunteers are a vital part of our shelter.  We rely on volunteers for a variety of tasks including dog bathing, socialization of cats and dogs, special events, cleaning, filing, video services, etc. The SPCA is a great place to get volunteer hours for school, or if you just want to make a difference in the life of a shelter animal.

*Please note: The SPCA's volunteer program is not accepting new volunteer applications for the SPCA's Adoption Center until further notice. This does not affect current SPCA volunteers. For those interested in volunteering at our Adoption Center, we truly appreciate your patience and understanding. We will keep everyone posted and announce when we are ready to resume accepting new volunteer applications.

However, the SPCA's 100% volunteer-run charity store, Fido's Finds & Kittie's Kollectibles, is actively accepting new volunteers! Please call the store at 276-656-1101 or stop by at 119 E. Main St, Martinsville, VA if interested! The charity store plays an important role in supporting the animals and mission of our SPCA, and additional helping hands are always appreciated. To volunteer with Fido's Finds, you must be 18 years of age. We are not able to accommodate any community service volunteers at this time.

In an effort to make our volunteer program safer and more effective, we are making some changes that will take effect on January 1, 2018:

  1. The minimum age for volunteers without supervision is now 16. This is a change related to safety and staff liability.
  2. Volunteers who fail to comply with the expectations outlined in the volunteer handbook will be asked to leave the facility to allow for others who may be productive.
  3. As of 2025, we no longer accept court-ordered community service.
