Adoption Requirements
The Martinsville-Henry County SPCA screens all potential adopters to ensure that the animal will have a safe and loving home. Those who are interested in adopting an animal from the SPCA can fill out an adoption application online or in person. To avoid any delays, filling out an online application will speed up the review process prior to visiting. Below are some general requirements for adopting a pet from the SPCA.
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- You must complete an adoption/foster application and be approved
- Have the knowledge and consent of all adults living in your household
- Have the adoption fee in either credit card, cash, or check
If the adopter has another dog, it may be mandatory that we do a meet and greet at the SPCA. This ensures that everyone in the household will get along. We may request a meet and greet that includes your children.
3-3-3 Rule
Expect your new pet to adjust slowly to a new home and new routine. Often, they have been in shelters or on their own for long periods of time and need lots of time and patience.
- 3 days to decompress: animals may show nervousness, hiding, reduced appetite, or guarding of food and water
- 3 weeks to settle into a routine: animals will begin to explore and show parts of their true personality
- 3 months to build trust and feel fully comfortable: animal's true personality has come out
