What We Do

Surrendering an Animal

"I can't keep my pet."

THE SPCA DOES NOT EUTHANIZE FOR SPACE. HOWEVER, EUTHANASIA MAY BE PERFORMED FOR SAFETY REASONS WITH BEHAVIORALLY UNMANAGEABLE ANIMALS OR FOR HUMANE CARE TO ANIMALS WHO ARE MEDICALLY SUFFERING. THE SPCA MAINTAINS A EUTHANASIA RATE OF LESS THAN 10%.

The SPCA is a limited intake facility for dogs and cats. What this means is that we simply do not have the space to take every stray or unwanted animal brought to our shelter.

In order to make space for intakes, we can ONLY take incoming animals when adoptable animals are first placed into loving homes. You are welcome to call us at (276) 638-7297 to check available space and be placed on the waiting list. This list is extensive and we cannot guarantee when, or if, you will be contacted. The order of contact is also dependant on the space available. Once we are able to make space available, we will work down our waiting list and schedule an evaluation appointment. Please bring any vet records that you may have or contact information for your pet’s veterinarian.  Animals from the Martinsville city and Henry County animal shelters will also be received when there is space.

When you arrive for your evaluation appointment your dog, will receive a behavioral evaluation and we will draw blood to test for heartworms. If your dog does not pass a behavioral evaluation, we unfortunately will not be able to accept your pet. This is a family facility and any behavioral concerns are a liability to our volunteers and visitors.

Your cat will be tested for feline AIDS, feline Leukemia, and ringworm.  If they are positive for any of these diseases, we cannot accept them as it poses a risk to our current population of cats. We will also assess your animal’s temperament and determine whether or not it will be safe to house in the shelter.

**Please anticipate that all evaluation appointments can take up to 30 minutes and you must remain on site for this time**

THE SPCA IS A NO-KILL SHELTER, DEFINED BY THE VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF HUMANE SOCIETIES AS A EUTHANASIA RATE BELOW 10%. EUTHANASIA AT THE SPCA IS FOR BEHAVIORALLY UNMANAGEABLE ANIMALS OR HUMANE CARE FOR ANIMALS MEDICALLY SUFFERING.

It costs the SPCA a minimum of $350 per animal that we take in to feed, medically treat, vaccinate, and spay/neuter your pet. The SPCA survives solely on contributions from the public and grants. We would greatly appreciate you considering a donation to help assist in the medical fees that we will accrue.

If you wish to surrender kittens and puppies we will require that you have the mother animal and father animal, if you own it, spayed or neutered.  When surrendering kittens/puppies you will be asked to schedule and pay for the spay/neuter surgery at that time. If you are unwilling to spay/neuter the parent animals, we will not accept your kittens or puppies.

Duration of Stay Agreement

The behavior and medical condition of each animal admitted to the SPCA adoption program will be re-evaluated during the animal’s stay. If an animal’s condition changes, the animal may be determined to be eligible for rehabilitation, manageable, not manageable, or unhealthy/untreatable. If an animal housed at the SPCA is not meeting the SPCA’s adoption criteria during its stay, it will be removed from “available” status and placed on “hold”. It will then be behaviorally and/or medically evaluated. If this animal is found to be a risk to other shelter animals or the public, it will be up for review for euthanasia in accordance with the SPCA Euthanasia Policy. This policy covers the discussion of euthanasia for public safety, animal behavior, public animal safety, animal medical status, etc.

“Regulated” animals are prohibited or disqualified for adoption by law, regulation, or county/city policy. These include animals that are unlawful to possess, dogs with a documented history of dangerous behavior, and animals that have been classified by County or City as “dangerous dogs.”

A dangerous dog is defined as a dog that:

·        Has twice within a 48-month period attacked, bitten, or otherwise caused injury to a person engaged in lawful activity, or

·        Has once attacked, bitten, or otherwise caused injury to a person engaged in lawful activity, resulting in death or substantial injury.
